Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Mickey grew up in a musical family. His father worked for the city and joined Mickey’s uncles to form a popular dance band called LEO MICHAEL'S ORCHESTRA. Mickey’s father played acoustic bass, trumpet, trombone and mandolin and sang in the band.

Over the past twenty-five years Mickey has become an accomplished songwriter and a recording artist, crafting songs that have captured the hearts of Newfoundlanders through their honest lyrics and well-honed melodies.

Mickey has lived in three Canadian provinces, worked as a teacher in British Columbia and has travelled extensively in North America and Asia. Wherever he has gone, his songs have generated interest and enthusiasm.

The song, My Newfoundland, released in 1994, was soon adopted by the owner of NTV, a local television station as a regional anthem. Thousands of viewers now hum along to its familiar melody.  Mickey’s song is thought by many to be a traditional Newfoundland ballad.

His CD of the same name featured ten original songs, ranging from gospel to love songs to ballads. It has led something of a charmed life in the local musical market. With radio and television airplay on NTV, CBC, VOWR and other stations, it continues to be an influential local recording.

Now, with dozens of unrecorded songs waiting for release, Mickey has undertaken a new album project. With support from producer Rick Hollett of Record Time Productions, the new collection will be released in the winter of 2006-2007. It will feature twelve new songs, including the title track: Something’s Not the Same.

Combining nostalgic appreciation for traditional values and ways with wry insight into the world opening before us, this song, and the album that it leads will present a wonderful mirror for contemporary Newfoundland and the world in general.

Mickey’s powerfully compelling, smoothly inviting voice, the clarity and simplicity of the arrangements and the selection of songs that move the heart will make his new album a landmark recording by a major Newfoundland songwriter.

Mickey Michael has recently been signed by Newfoundland’s leading artist management agency, Second Stage Creative Arts, who will represent him for distribution and promotion of the new CD. For more information call 709-335-7007 or email dan@secondstage.ca.
