WHAT HAS three heads, thirty fingers, eight f-holes and thirty-one strings?

Night Kitchen is an acoustic duo exploring improvisational approaches to a wide range of music that includes jazz, folk, pop and world music. Night Kitchen has quickly generated a local buzz in St. John's, Newfoundland through live and television performances and recent appearances. During its first year the group appeared as a trio with Grant Curle on string bass. More recently, Night Kitchen has reformed as a duo, with hopes of adding a bass player and percussionist in the near future.

Night Kitchen currently consists of Dan Rubin (violin, viola, bouzouki, guitar) and Mark Tremblett (seven-string archtop guitar). Both are composers and vocalists; their collaborative approach to creating new works has generated some surprisingly strong material that ranges from instrumentals to ballads.

Dan Rubin is well-known across Canada as a performer, composer and recording artist. Through his work with the traditional Newfoundland acoustic trio Atlantic Union and from his solo performances he has earned a reputation in Newfoundland and in Western Canada as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He currently serves as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Musicians' Association.

Mark Tremblett, in addition to his impressive talents as a guitarist, has a wonderfully smooth approach to jazz standards and is exploring songs that range from James Taylor's ballads to George Benson's guitar and voice work. Since training as a rock guitarist he has moved increasingly toward the jazz idiom, with inspiration from artists like John Pizzareli. In addition, Mark is a luthier, who built the lovely seven-stringed instrument he now plays.

Grant Curle moved to St. John's from Manitoba where he trained on the string bass. An adventurous player, who likes to colour outside the lines, he is also a writer and visual artist. Grant left the group in 2008 to pursue studies in music.

Recent appearances by Night Kitchen have included The Salon coffeehouse and a recent multicultural fair as well as earlier performances at a benefit concert in Pouch Cove and on Rogers Cablevision. These performances have drawn very positive reviews from Jeff Gilhooley (CBC radio host), Nora Hughes (cafe owner, Pouch Cove) and many others.
