Tommy Sands has performed all over the world, drawing capacity audiences
from Berlin to Belfast. This remarkable, inspiring musician will be
visiting Newfoundland for the first time in mid-July, performing three
concerts across our province.
He is known as the creator of songs like “There were Roses” and “The Heart’s
a Wonder.” In Northern Ireland, where he grew up, he is known as THE
SONGMAN, the one who brought together the two opposing sides when the Irish
peace negotiations had broken down. He did this by crossing the border to
assemble a choir of Catholic and Protestant children, whose songs coaxed the
negotiators back to the table and helped bring about the Northern Irish
Peace Accord.
Author, songwriter, performer and storyteller, Sands is a rare combination.
His reviews come from politicians and major authors as well as fellow
musicians and music reviewers:
- “In two minutes the entire audience was singing with him.” - Pravda
- “A richly talented singer and songwriter.” - Boston Globe
- “You can trust the singer as well as the song.” – Irish poet Seamus
Heaney
- “Sands is a true weaver of dreams and spells.” – Hot Press
- “A stirring, spellbinding performance.” – Wall Street Journal
- “Tommy Sands is one of the most powerful songwriters in Ireland, if not the
rest of the world.” – Sing Out! Magazine
- “The gentle songs of a gentle man, rang out above the tumult and the
shouting. . .Through people like Tommy Sands there will be an answer.” – Belfast Telegraph
- “Tommy Sands is the only man, without a private army, who can intimidate
me.” – Loyalist politician David Ervine
- “Tommy Sands has achieved that difficult but wonderful balance between
knowing and loving the traditions of his home and being concerned with the
future of the whole world.” – Pete Seeger
