MUSIC TECHNOLOGY & SERVICES FAIR
Huge changes are sweeping through the world of music, brought on by a shift to digital production, recording and broadcast of information. For musicians, these changes have to some extent undermined musical traditions, put people’s jobs at risk, decreased the audience for live music events and homogenized the music to which regional audiences and populations are exposed.
A significant example of this is the change in recording technology from older means of analog recording using magnetic tape, phonograph records and cassette tapes, to digital recording and mixing. As these new means of recording and modifying sound have become available, they have put recording technology into everyone’s hands. Now, in Newfoundland and Labrador, we have been told, more than 400 CD music projects are completed ever year! Of these at least 40 per year are being produced on a fully commercial level.
As part of Our Future in Music, we will sponsor a music technology and services fair highlighting the leading tools and services that musicians can use to create, share and earn income from their music. USB-ready microphones, digital recording and mixing decks, programs and devices that translate any instrument’s notes into any other instrument and podcast broadcasting are some of the specific tools and techniques to be shared. Selected presenters will be invited to rent booth space during this part of the conference, so that delegates, guests, local musicians and the public will have access to their displays, products and materials.
Participants in the trade fair will include local and national organizations that offer key services to support the work of musicians such as the CBC, the Galaxie broadcast network, local instrument makers, insurance services, the AFM EPW Pension Plan, our own provincial Music Industry Association and the AFM itself.
The general aim of the trade fair will be to put into the hands of working musicians the tools and services they will need to survive and flourish in the new working environment of digital technology and worldwide distribution of music.
