Spirit of the Islands

We operate a mobile digital recording studio supporting independent artists who are working in a range of acoustic styles, including classical music, folk and world music, jazz and blues.  We have been involved in producing recordings, concerts, theatre performances, multi-media works and have produced music at two world's fairs.

Our most recent projects have been albums by Newfoundland harper Ed Kavanagh and the second album by the group Atlantic Union.   In each case, critics and audiences have been extremely positive about the sound of our recordings.   We have achieved the highest standards of acoustic fidelity, while using extremely simple and portable digital equipment.

About our equipment. Our main studio is located in a quiet rural area.  Although the studio building is less than 800 square feet, we are able to accommodate up to five piece groups, with sufficient isolation to record separate tracks.   Our facility uses state of the art digital recording equipment, but we also have access to analog recorders for those who prefer the warmth of this medium.

Our main board is a Roland 8-track digital deck.   Submixing allows up to 16 tracks of input, and we are able to work in 24-track when needed.   ADAT equipment is also available for integrating material imported in that format.

Our microphones include a Rode NT2, paired AKG C3000's, high quality Marshall condensors and a full range of stage microphones.

Our contacts include a wide range of performing and studio musicians; we have experienced arrangers and composers on staff who can provide additional instrumentation and instrumental tracks to enhance your songs.

We have previously used the mastering facilities of Record Time Productions in St. John's, MusicLane in Toronto and Seabourne Sound in Victoria, BC for completion of recording projects and can now offer full mastering of acoustic projects in need of this step.

Past recording projects. Our past work in studios in Vancouver, Victoria, Berkeley, Hawaii and here in Newfoundland has included playing, arranging, and producing albums and film scores for Kate Wolf, Leon Bibb, Doug Cho, Ed Kavanagh, Flying Mountain, New Earth, Patrick Hernon, Frank Hoorn and Atlantic Union.

Recording rates. Our in-studio recording is based on a $35 per hour rate, which includes all of our current equipment.   Mastering is available at $70 an hour or a day rate of $700 for mastering up to 12 tracks.    Package and project rates are available, depending on your budget.  Mobile recording is available world-wide based on equivalent rates plus a travel and accommodation allowance.   We can produce artwork and inserts to complete your album and prepare it for manufacturing.
